Even though there are plenty of core busting, glute working, body strengthening workouts you can do without a single piece of exercise equipment, you can truly take your indoor physical activity to the next level with some helpful equipment. Plus — as we’re all a bit locked down at the moment — you may be experimenting with the idea of an at-home gym. Getting your sweat on any time of the day without extraneous travel time is definitely appealing.
Add in all the awesome promos, free classes, and extended trial periods that apps and online services are offering and you’ve got yourself all the resources you need to stay physically active at home!
Alright, so what equipment will maximize your in-home workouts without breaking the bank?
Luckily, there’s a slew of super affordable, easy-to-find, and simple to operate exercise equipment that will fit easily in a closet or even drawer.
Billie says “I just received this in the mail, and I knew immediately I would like it. It is incredibly cushioned, which for me is of major importance. I have bad knees, and regular mats are never cushioned enough for me. I bruise easily, but this seems like it will prevent any sort of bruising or soreness on my knees or hips. I don’t really do any impact type exercise, so I cannot give a review to it on that. I do however do Piyo daily, as well as a few other bodyweight resistance and strengthening exercises, and this has an awesome grip. No more sliding or falling due to instability issues caused by no traction. I look forward to being able to do the exercises without fear of a few routines again! On a side note, I haven’t noticed any odd or offensive smells, so that’s a bonus! I am actually considering ordering a second mat for my husband! He is 6’3, and this seems like it is long enough, and soft enough for his back injury, for him to use as well.”
2. Prodigen Adjustable Ankle Weights Set
Ankle weights are an excellent way to increase the intensity of your workout! Plus, strap them on for a walk around the neighborhood, while cleaning the house, or even your weekly jog or run and feel that extra burn. This Prodigen Adjustable Ankle Weights Set come with five individual bags for each of the different bag weights making it super easy to store and organize. They’re great for the whole family as they come equipped with fully adjustable and sturdy straps and strong velcro bands that also wick moisture and sweat yet are soft and comfortable to avoid irritation. A single pair of adjustable ankle weights cost $15.99.
Johnathan Gastkill says “I bought these weights to assist with rehab post knee surgery. I really like the detail to quality that was used to make these weights. The stitching is strong, and the fabric used is a thick neoprene. The neoprene feels smooth against skin and helps with moisture control. The weight is easy to adjust and provides a good amount of resistance for training. Everything about this product has met my expectations. I definitely recommend this product.”
Sandbags are similar to weights and kettlebells and are an excellent tool for endurance and weightlifting exercises! Plus, sandbags offer a second layer of challenge on top of the weight — the sand moves around during movement, which “activates smaller, harder-to-reach muscles in your core and arms.” These Hyperwear SandBell Fitness Sandbags are ranked as one of the world’s most versatile and effective free weight systems! SandBells are not only durable, but they’re also super soft and easy to grip, which means they’re also safe. The sand is secured in a leak-free, durable neoprene bag! A 6-pound sandbag costs $21.99.
Urbanite says “Easier on the wrists and palms than dumbbells. Shifting sand creates a challenge. Smooth neoprene surface slides across wood and laminate flooring. It also functions as a nice pillow when doing PT floor exercises. Bonus: best biceps and forearms workout I’ve ever had has been with various sizes of these sandbells! They also work for single-arm presses if you grab a handful of sand like it’s a handle. Very fun for anti-rotation core work. I’m a big fan.”
4. LuxFit Foam Roller
Along with boosting the effectiveness of your workout, it’s also important that you’re taking care of those boosted muscles. Foam rollers are a great way to ease tension and tightness in the body and provide a super-effective cooldown that enhances your overall workout! This extra firm LuxFit Foam Roller is great for a variety of uses including warm-ups and cool-downs, physical therapy, massage therapy, yoga, and certain exercises. Rollers are known to help prevent muscle injury and help with back pain, as well as helping with balance, positioning, and postural strengthening activities. A single 18-inch foam roller costs $13.99.
Amazon Steve says “I purchased two of the LuxFit High Density Foam Rollers after reviewing many online. My wife and I recently started the workout routine, 80 Day Obsession and these works great. Many will advise to get a large size if possible. I ordered the 36” and I’m glad we did. They’re great for rolling and releasing especially after days of high intensity interval training. These are also high density, so they don’t give very much, which is a good thing. Many others are softer and do not do the job they’re intended to do. I would definitely purchase again. I rate these a perfect 5/5.”
If you’re going to start with any piece of at-home gym equipment, then exercises bands should be your go-to! They are easy to use, uber affordable, and can maximize almost any floor exercise! This set of Fit Simplify Exercise Bands gives you the option to work up from the easiest to the most difficult band tension. Each band is 12 by 2 inches and crafted from heavy-duty, yet 100 percent natural latex, free of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). These resistance bands are perfect for seamlessly integrating into your regular workout routine or beginning an entirely new one! They can be used for general exercise, stretching, strength training, and weight routines, as well as yoga, physical therapy, and even rehabilitation. Fit Simplify includes a free instruction guide, eBook, and access to online training videos for newbies, as well as a super simple carry bag to keep them organized and stored in your home! A set of 5 bands costs $15.95.
Scott says “When I was in the hospital, my doctor recommended that I begin working out. I had seen these bands before but wasn’t sure if they really worked. I needed something low impact and could easily use. So, I ordered them. It has been a few weeks and I have been pleasantly surprised. I can feel the difference. My arms and shoulders are getting stronger. I’m beginning to show some improvement that my wife is noticing. So much so that she is using them while I’m at work. This is a good product. Cheaper than weights and I believe more versatile. I can simulate exercises that I used to do while in the Corps. I wanted something low impact because of surgeries that I’ve had and these works great. Started with the lowest possible just to get used to them. Now working with the next higher resistance. After this quick workout, I feel like I’ve done something good for my health. Highly recommend.”
6. Synergee Gliding Discs Core Sliders
Exercise gliding discs are an excellent way to utilize a small space to get your heart pumping hard! Along with a great cardio workout, exercise discs are also pro at targeting your core and thigh muscles. These Synergee Gliding Discs Core Sliders promise to both challenge your body, but also provide a fun, fast-paced workout experience. These gliding disco core sliders will “introduce a balance and stability challenge to every movement, which forces you to engage your core muscles and results in your abdominals becoming stronger.” Synergee Gliding Discs are dual-sided — foam and plastic — and can be used on a variety of surfaces including hardwood, carpet, or turf. Plus, they’re also small, — 7-inch diameter! — light, and compact making them easy to store in your home or even travel with. A set of 2 costs $19.95.
Kara says “I would hands down buy these again! They work great on both carpet (even my longer-ish carpet) and my hard wood floors. They’re exactly as described, the perfect size, and absolutely perfect for the 80 day obsession. Nothing negative to say (except that my abs are killing me!)”
7. WOD Nation Speed Jump Rope
Dust off that old jump rope and take it from the playground to your living room for an intense full-body workout. While any old jump rope will provide a good workout when used properly, the best way to get your bang for your buck is with a speed jump rope! These ropes are designed specifically for hardcore, speedy jump roping to get your heart racing, your arms working, and your legs burning. This WOD Nation Speed Jump Rope is incredibly fast while also creating a stable swing that allows for easy recovery after inaccurate swings. WOD promises their jump rope is highly durable and long-lasting promising you to get in the best shape of your life! Plus, with a few snips of the wire cutters, you can string together multiple ropes for doubles! One speed jump rope with an extra cable costs $19.98.
Drew Anderson says “I bought this rope to work on my double under with. The normal gym ropes were too slow. This rope is fast, almost too fast for single under if you’re not conscientious about the speed you’re swinging with. My only complaint is the handle. I’m an old retired powerlifter/strongman competitor getting my fitness in with more of a CrossFit style workout, and the handles don’t fit my hands really well. They’re just a tab bit small. But it’s not so bad that I’d drop the rating down. The build seems like a quality build and once I set the length, I’ve never had to do anything else to keep it adjusted. The bearings rotate smooth and feel solid. Overall, it’s a great rope.”
8. Sunny Health & Fitness Door Way Chin Up and Pull Up Bar
If you’ve got a doorway in your house, then you’ve got the ability to do some serious pull-ups every day! This Sunny Health & Fitness Door Way Chin Up and Pull Up Bar is highly durable, sturdy, and chrome plated to last long and provide an extra layer of safety. After properly mounting — this is the most important part of using a pull-up bar! — the Sunny Health & Fitness Doorway Chin Up and Pull Up Bar can hold up to 220 pounds. It comes with an adjustable length, — between 24.5 and 36 inches — padded, non-slip, comfort grips, and weight-bearing brackets for maximum stability. A single pull up bar costs $18.65.
Frugal and Fruitful says “This was harder to mount than expected in our doorway. I think it will be safest to use the screws and support ends to ensure this doesn’t fall mid-workout. Simply the tension of the rubber at the ends again the flush doorway does not create enough support for all the members of our family to feel confident as we take turns hanging. Everything else about this bar is great. It seems to fit on various size doorways well. UPDATE (June 2017) After making some adjustments to the “tension”, we all can use this bar without need of the screws. For our family, we go elsewhere if we want to lift our chins directly over the bar as we do not have enough clearance above the bar. If we lowered it, the husband would have to duck to get through the doorway.”
9. Ice Tiger Ab Roller Wheel
Core muscles are the key to overall better athletic performance. A strong core will protect your back for jogging and running, increase weight for weightlifting, and can improve Pilates and yoga positions. If you’re looking to specifically target those core muscles, you’ll want to invest in a high-quality ab roller! Anna says “This is a very sturdy ab roller, unlike some others I’ve used. It is well packaged and easy to assemble. The knee pad is very comfortable and a major bonus. Shipped very quickly as well.”
10. ProBody Pilates Store Professional Grade Exercise Ball

Matthew says “Decided to buy this ball… had the tip on how to inflate it from the previous review, so I felt like a pro! Super easy to pump, the ball feels heavy duty, just feels right when using it to exercise. My wife is a fitness person, and she’s super happy, so we are good to go! Glad I bought this, had some issues with others bought in stores, didn’t pass wife test. Typical I guess, I get it a little cheaper on Amazon, and with better quality. Love it, no issues! Works awesome!”
